17.4 – Mindset/Goals Workshop

Step 1 - Remove

Think about any great sculpture. It was just a big block of marble. Without removing at the stuff it would not be a piece of art.

List these things to Remove:

  1. People – everyone is going in different trajectories, who is sucking your energy, toxic relationships, who are you hanging out out of obligation, family members. If you are not “F*uck yes” about hanging out with someone get rid of them.
  2. Stuff – Marie Kondo all the stuff you don’t need – and sell it for more capital to buy more income producing assets. Value experiences and lifestyle over things.
  3. Deals/Retail Assets – You might need to sell a bad (sub 1% Rent to Value) rental or 401K retirement plan that is high risk and low returns.
  4.  Ideas/limiting beliefs/obligations – excuses or labels you have given yourself

Use the following framework to tackle a particular area of improvement. An example below.

  1. Identify the Issue – What is a challenge or problem you are facing that, if solved, would make the biggest difference in your work life?

Adjusting my lifestyle to schedule time to consistently work to complete assigned tasks from part-time job on weekends. Before I was learning on my own time on weekday nights and on weekends, now I must become disciplined to work at times when others are relaxing.

  1. Define the Outcome – What is that you truly want? How will you know when it is handled? What does success look like?

To be able to balance my full-time engineering job with my part-time job. Success will look like a time-blocked routine where I am able to hold my engineering job, while consistently editing videos and accomplishing other assigned tasks from my part-time job. (This will be more measurable and relevant when we discuss what weekly tasks you want me to do).

  1. Identify Importance – Why is that so important to you?

If I don’t complete this first step, I won’t be able to move forward, this is currently the best possible opportunity I have, so I will give it my all. Then I can move on to learn real estate and keep taking steps to ultimately get out of the rat race.

  1. Identify consequences of not taking action – What had it, is it, or will it cost you if you continue on this path?

If I don’t take action, I will lose this opportunity, disappoint you, and myself.

  1. Identify any blocks (mental, emotional, physical) – What is holding you back from handling this? What justifications/rationalizations have you used to keep you from moving forward?

The mental/physical would be getting used to working more hours per week. Getting used to working a full-time job during the week and working on the weekend when my friends are out partying. Some rationalizations would be comparing myself to my other friends and seeing how much free time they have to relax and hangout.

  1. Decide and break down action to the very next step – What is the very next [one simple action] step that will get you moving ASAP?

  1. Create Accountability – Besides me, who or what can you use as leverage to ensure you follow through on your commitment?

Going to a job I don’t like everyday is motivation for me to keep achieving more, I know if I don’t follow through on my commitments, I will be stuck at my job forever. I also have a couple other friends who are into improving themselves. And one who is learning about real estate.
